Bears Win Petite Final at NCAA Championship
WEST WINDSOR, N.J.--(5/26/12)--The Coast Guard Women's Varsity 8 easily won the Petite Final at the NCAA Division III Rowing Championships at Lake Mercer as six seniors went out with a win in the final race of their careers.
Coast Guard posted a time of 6:50.90 to beat Puget Sound (7:03.33). The Bears took a lead in the first 250 meters and led by open water just 500 meters in and increased their lead throughout. The Bears, who placed second at the NEWMAC Championships for the second straight season, were making their first NCAA Championship appearance since 2008.
Earlier in the week, senior Holly Madden was named a CRCA first team All-American while senior Sarah Jane Otey earned second-team All-America honors as well as the NCAA Division III Elite 89 Award for the best GPA (3.97) of all the rowers at the championship.
The varsity eight consists of six seniors; coxswain Julianna Harvin, Sarah Jane Otey, Holly Madden, Tiffany Zehnle, Erin Nolan and Kelli Normoyle along with juniors Jess Ward and Catherine Schmitz and freshman Brynna Cooke.
Otey was a member of the 2008 varsity 8 which competed at the NCAA championships. Otey is a four-year All-conference selection while Madden is a two-time All-NEWMAC selection after both earned NEWMAC honors this year.
