DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Nakira Examond had 24 points and 10 rebounds leading host UMass Dartmouth to an 85-67 win over Coast Guard in the 21st Annual Lafrance Hospitality Classic.
Freshman Emma Puddington led the Bears with 11 points to go with six rebounds off the bench while classmates Julia Guerrero and Kyra Hartman along with senior Micaela Martinelli each finished with nine points in the loss.
Sophomore Brenna Farrington led Coast Guard with eight rebounds while Hartman had a team-high four steals.
Coast Guard which shot 33.8 percent (26-58) and hit 8 of 31 from 3-point range drops to 1-2 on the season.
The Corsairs were 35 of 77 from the floor (45.5 percent) and made 6 of 17 from behind the arc.
UMass Dartmouth (2-0) scored the first 11 points of the game. Coast Guard would cut the deficit to 21-17 on a putback by freshman Emma Puddington before the Corsairs went on a 9-0 run to take a 30-17 lead with 5:37 left in the opening half. The Bears trailed 42-26 at the half.
The Corsairs would use a 19-0 third quarter run to open up a 69-30 lead with 3:55 left in the third quarter.
Coast Guard would score 30 points in the fourth quarter outscoring UMass Darmouth 30-11.
The Bears will take on Endicott in the consolation game at noon on Sunday.
