NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Micaela Martinelli had a game-high 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists while freshman Kyra Hartman added a season-high 16 points leading Coast Guard to a 65-52 win over Nichols in the Bears home opener.
Coast Guard evens its record at 1-1 on the season while Nichols is also 1-1 on the year.
Junior Breanna Wood had a game-high nine rebounds to lead the Bears, who shot 31.5 percent from the floor (23 of 73) in the win. Coast Guard connected on 7 of 27 (25.9 percent) from 3-point range.
Junior Ciarri Formby-Lavertu and sophomore Melody Millett led Nichols with 11 points while senior Rebecca Cleary finished with 10 points for the Bison. Sophomore Shannon St. Lawrence led the way with eight rebounds. Nichols shot 27.5 percent (14 of 51) and made 3 of 11 from behind the arc.
Coast Guard jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before Nichols pulled even 10-10 with under a minute left in the opening quarter. The Bears led 13-11 after the first quarter.
Nichols took its largest lead of the game 26-21 following a 3-pointer by St. Lawrence to cap a 6-0 run. Coast Guard would use a 6-1 run to end the half and tie the game 27-27 at the break.
The Bears scored seven straight turning a 29-29 tie into a 36-29 lead with 6:23 left in the third capped on a 3-pointer by Hartman.
Nichols used a 10-3 run to tie the game 39-39 with 3:24 left in the quarter. Coast Guard led 45-42 after three quarters.
Coast Guard would take control of the game scoring eight straight turning a 48-44 lead with 8:37 left into a 56-44 edge with 3:09 remaining.
The Bears are back in action this weekend at the UMass Dartmouth LaFrance Hospitality Tournament. Coast Guard will play the host Corsairs on Saturday at 5:30.
