KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Coast Guard withstood a late Merchant Marine rally and the Bears held off the archrival Mariners 46-44 in non-conference game.
The Bears shot a season-low 25 percent from the field (18-72), but dominated the glass as they outrebounded the Mariners by 33 as Coast Guard collected a season-high 62 rebounds including 31 offensive boards.
Coast Guard held what seemed to be a comfortable 44-34 lead with 3:28 left following a 3-pointer by junior Micaela Martinelli, but the Mariners would outscore the Bears 10-2 down the stretch falling just short.
The Mariners cut the lead to 44-41 with 58 seconds left and junior Johanna Moolenaar got a key offensive rebound and was fouled with 33 seconds left. She made one-of-two to give the Bears a 45-41 lead.
Martinelli would make one-of-two free throws with 12 seconds left to make the score 46-41. Kaleigh D'Arcy made a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to make it a one possession game 46-43.
MMA's Hunter Hightower was fouled with one second left. She made the first and was called for a violation as she tried to miss the second as the Bears held on.
Coast Guard improved to 9-8 overall while the Mariners dropped to 12-5. With the win the Bears take a 5-2 lead in the battle for the Superintendent's Trophy this season.
Martinelli lead the Bears with 12 points to go with eight rebounds while freshman Brenna Farrington was also in double figures as she finished with 10 points. Sophomore Breanna Wood had eight points and tied a career-high with 14 rebounds.
The Bears opened up their largest lead of the quarter, 34-27, on a basket by sophomore Breanna Wood with 3:23 left in the third quarter and Coast Guard led 36-32 after three.
Coast Guard made 4 of 20 from 3-point range. Merchant Marine was 14 of 47 from the floor (29.8 percent) and made 3 of 10 from beyond the arc.
The Mariners jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 6:24 left in the first quarter before the Bears ran off seven straight and took the lead 9-7 on a layup by freshman Annabella Farabaugh with 4:20 left in the opening quarter. The Mariners led 15-13 after one.
Merchant Marine led 19-15 with 6:47 left in the first half, but the Bears held the Mariners to just one field goal the rest of the half and outscored the Mariners 9-2 to take a 24-21 lead into halftime.
Coast Guard dominated the board in the opening half outrebounding Merchant Marine 34-12 with 19 offensive rebounds. Sophomore Brenna Wood led the way with seven rebounds in the opening half.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host MIT in a NEWMAC game at 1:00.
