DUDLEY, Mass. - Senior Gillian Gerton tallied her fifth double-double of the season, leading Coast Guard to the 61-48 win over Nichols in non-conference action.
With the win the Bears improve to 8-7 on the season while the Bison fall to 3-12.
Gerton scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the 22nd double-double of her career. Junior Micaela Martinelli led all scorers with 15 points, six rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Breanna Wood came two rebounds short of a double-double scoring 10 points and pulling down eight rebounds.
Freshman Isabella Nerney led Nichols with 14 points while senior Allison Cerrato scored 12 points with eight rebounds. Freshman Shannon St. Lawrence was second on the team with seven rebounds.
Coast Guard took an early six point advantage as Martinelli knocked down a jumper with 3:59 left in the first quarter for the 10-4 lead. Martinelli had six points over this stretch while Wood had the other four.
The Bears pushed their lead to 10 in the second quarter after junior Jayla Joyner found Gerton for the layup with just under six minutes left to play in the half making the score 20-10.
In the second half, the Bison cut the Coast Guard lead to four (28-24) after junior Mekaela Fithian-Giantonio took a pass from Nerney and banged a two pointer with 8:37 left to play in the third.
Nichols continued to cut into the Bears lead right before the end of the third as St. Lawrence hit a three pointer with 11 seconds to go in the period making the score 39-37 going into the fourth.
Coast Guard answered in the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run to start the period. Wood had five of her 10 points over this stretch helping the Bears put the game out of reach and seal their eighth win of the season.
Coast Guard shot 37.7% (23-61) from the floor and made 4-23 (17.4%) from beyond the arc. The Bears held an eight point advantage in the paint (22-16) and a nine point edge in second chance points (11-2).
Nichols was 18-59 (30.5%) overall and shot 23.5% (4-17) from three.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday, January 20th, when they travel to Boston, Massachusetts to take on the Emerson Lions in NEWMAC action. Opening tip is 1:00.
