NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Junior Micaela Martinelli had 14 of her team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter as Coast Guard overcame 12-point deficit after three quarters to beat Wheaton 66-61 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Wheaton led 47-35 after three quarters. Martinelli would knock down back to back treys to start the fourth before freshman Brenna Farrington's 3-pointer cut the deficit to 47-44 with 7:35 left. Coast Guard would score 13 straight points to start the fourth, taking the lead 48-47 on a pair of free throws by junior Johanna Moolenaar with 5:52 left.
The Bears would take the lead for good 54-52 on a bucket by Martinelli with 2:20 left. On the Bears next possession, she would hit a trey pushing the lead to 57-52 with 1:46 left.
Irish would knock down all four of her free throws in 11 seconds to ice the game for the Bears, who trailed by as many as 15 second half.
Coast Guard made 8 of 12 field goals in the fourth quarter while Wheaton was just 3 of 15 in the final 10 minutes.
Senior Gillian Gerton had her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds to go with a game-high four blocks before fouling out. It was her 20th career double-double.
Freshman Mikayla Pucci had a game-high 24 points and a team-high nine rebounds to lead Wheaton.
Coast Guard started the game ice cold making just 1 of first 19 shots from the floor. Wheaton led 14-4 after the first quarter with the Bears making 1 of 17 field goals.
Wheaton led 29-16 at halftime. Coast Guard was 6 of 30 (20 percent) from the field and missed all nine 3-pointers in the first half while the Lyons were 9 of 32 (28.1 percent) in the opening half.
The Bears, who were just 1 of 14 from 3-point range in the first three quarters, hit 4 of 7 from behind the arc in making the fourth quarter comeback outscoring Wheaton 31-14 in the fourth.
Coast Guard shot 37.3 percent (22-59) in the win making 5 of 21 from 3-point range while the Lyons were 17 of 62 (27.4 percent) and made 6 of 24 from behind the arc.
The 15-point comeback win is the largest since the Bears did the same to archrival Merchant Marine last year rallying from 15 down to win 51-45.
Coast Guard improves to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the NEWMAC while Wheaton drops to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
The Bears are back in action on Thursday when they travel to WPI for a 7:00 tip.
