NEW LONDON, Conn. – Catholic outscored Coast Guard 17-5 in the third quarter to take control as the Cardinals beat the Bears 61-49 in a non-conference game.
Catholic led 31-29 before freshman Maggie Rakowsky got fouled, made a 3-pointer and converted the four point play with two seconds left in the first half giving the Cardinals a 35-29 lead at the break.
The Cardinals (2-0) would score the first six points of the second half to start the 17-5 spurt in the third. Coast Guard would make just 2 of 11 field goal attempts in the quarter and trailed 52-34 after three quarters.
Rakowsky led Catholic with 12 points off the bench while senior Briana Bull and sophomore Sydney Poindexter each had a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Mollie Reynolds and senior Samantha Cowan each had five steals in the win.
Catholic was 19 for 57 from the floor (33.3) while making 2 of 11 from 3-point range while the Bears shot 30.8 percent (16-52) from the field and hit on 4 of 15 from behind the arc.
Coast Guard outrebounded the Cardinals 46-47, but the Bears turned the ball over 32 times and were just 13 of 26 from the foul line.
The Bears (1-2) are back in action on Nov. 29th when they host Springfield in the NEWMAC opener at 7:00.
