NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Gill Gerton has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in the last four weeks as she led the Bears to a pair of wins to close out the regular season.
Gerton averaged 15.5 points and 10 rebounds per game (18 of her 20 rebounds were defensive boards) as the Bears went 2-0 during the week to close the season.
She registered her ninth double-double of the season in 63-50 win over Emerson as the Bears, who have won eight of their last nine, clinched a berth in the NEWMAC tournament.
The Bears , who started 1-7 in NEWMAC play this season, are now 11-14 overall and finished 8-8 in the conference earning the #6 seed in the tournament.
Gerton shot 44.8 percent from the field (13-29) and also had 12 assists, two blocks and five steals in the two wins.
She is the Bears all-time leader with 101 blocked shots and her 564 rebounds is 11th at the Academy.
The sixth-seeded Bears will play at third-seeded WPI on Wednesday at 7:00 in the quarterfinals of the NEWMAC tournament. The teams split during the regular season with WPI winning 65-51 in Worcester before the Bears won 54-50 in New London.
