NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Gill Gerton has earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week as Coast Guard picked up a pair of wins against teams above them in the standing including WPI, which was 18-2 overall on Saturday.
Gerton had her sixth double-double of the season as she had 12 points and 13 rebounds in a 66-58 win at Clark on Wednesday before scoring 15 points to go with four rebounds in 54-50 win over WPI to snap the Engineers seven-game win streak and hand them just their second NEWMAC loss of the season.
During the week, she led the Bears with 13.5 points while adding 13 defensive rebounds, three blocks and four steals in the two wins.
Gerton leads the Bears with 12.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game to go with her team-high 26 blocks. She is now just two blocks shy of the Coast Guard all-time blocks record of 93 held by Corinne McCormack ('08).
Coast Guard is now 7-13 overall and 5-7 in NEWMAC play. The Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Wheaton for a NEWMAC game at 7:00.
