DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Junior Gill Gerton had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while senior Amanda Roy finished with a career-high 14 points as Coast Guard erased an early 10 point deficit and beat Rivier 67-57 in the opening round of the 2016 Fairfield Inn and Suites Tournament at UMass Dartmouth.
Coast Guard, which improves to 2-0 for the first time since the 2013-14 season, will take on host UMass Dartmouth in the championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m. Rivier drops to 0-2.
Sophomore Micaela Martinelli had a career-high 18 rebounds to go with six points while freshman Breanna Wood had a career-high 12 points along with seven rebounds in the win.
Just as they did to start the game, Rivier would score the first 10 points of the second half to erase a 33-25 halftime deficit taking a 35-33 lead with 7:43 left in the third quarter. The Raiders would outscore the Bears 18-3 to start the half taking a 43-36 lead with 4:39 left in the quarter.
Coast Guard would respond as Roy knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in a 8-0 Bears run as Coast Guard regained the lead 44-43. The Bears led 51-48 after three quarters.
The Bears would take control of the game using an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter turning a 56-55 lead with 7:56 left into a 64-55 lead with 4:27 left following a bucket by Gerton. The Raiders would not make a field goal in the final 7:56 of the game.
Rivier scored the first ten points of the game as Coast Guard missed its first seven field goal attempts before a basket by Martinelli with 6:25 left in the first quarter made the score 10-2.
The Bears would use a 9-0 run closing to 12-11 with 3:37 left on a layup by Wood.
The Raiders took a 15-11 lead with 57 seconds left in the first quarter before the Bears used a 20-2 spurt capped a on Gerton layup to take a 31-17 lead with 3:58 left in the first half.
Coast Guard led 33-25 at halftime behind 11 points and seven rebounds from Gerton. The Bears shot 32.6 percent in the first half (14-43) making just 2 of 15 from behind the arc. Rivier was 9 of 33 from the floor (27.3 percent) in the opening half making 3 of 9 from 3-point range.
Kaylee Kacavas had a game-high 23 points to lead Rivier.
The Bears shot 34.2 percent in the game (27 for 79) including 6 of 27 from 3-point range and Coast Guard dominated the glass outrebounding the Raiders 64-40 including 19 offensive rebounds.
