Bears Split With Springfield

NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Coast Guard softball split with Springfield on Friday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The Bears took the first game 10-6 before falling 10-3 in the second. Coast Guard is now 13-11 overall and 5-3 in NEWMAC play. Springfield is now 10-10 overall and 3-3 in the NEMWAC.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow on the road at Emerson in a NEWMAC double header at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.


Junior Kayla Sowers (1-for-4) led the Bears with three RBI's and classmate Courtney McKenna (1-for-4) and senior Sharayah Simco (1-for-1) both had two RBI's in the Bears victory. Juniors Kylie Vaverek was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Carly Hattman (1-for-3) and freshman Maggie Perez (2-for-4) both brought in runs for Coast Guard.

The Bears exploded with five runs in the first inning. McKenna put the Bears on the board first with an RBI single. Sowers had a two run single to extend the lead, 3-0. Perez had an RBI single and Hattman got walked sending one home to give the Bears a 5-0 advantage.

Meghan Sastram (2-for-4) gave the Pride their first run on an error sending one run in to cut the Springfield deficit, 5-1 in the top of the second.

The Bears scored three more runs in the second and third inning. In the second, Simco had a SAC fly to give the Bears a 6-1 lead. In the third, Vaverek had an RBI double and McKenna grounded out to shortstop with an RBI, as the Bears held a 8-1 edge.

In the top of the fourth, Alexyss Conley hit a homerun to bring the Pride within six, trailing 8-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Sowers grounded out with an RBI to give the Bears one more at 9-2.

Springfield started to inch their way back in the top of the sixth as Conley hit a homer with two RBI's and Hannah Salvietti singled out with an RBI to bring the Pride within three, 9-6.

In the bottom of the sixth, Simco hit an RBI single to give the Bears the 10-6 final.

Sophomore Sydney Arendt pitched the full game for the Bears with four strikeouts, improving to 6-6 on the season.


Yaixsa Vargas (2-for-3), Allie Wheeler (2-for-4), and Shelby Allen (1-for-4) each hit a homerun in a 10-3 victory for Springfield over Coast Guard. Wheeler led the Pride with three RBI's, Vargas, Allen and Ava Fernandez all had two RBI's and Conley had one RBI for Springfield.

McKenna (1-for-3) led the Bears with two RBI's and Hurley (1-for-4) added one RBI for the Bears.

Vargas hit a home run in the top of the first to take a quick 1-0 lead. The Bears held the Pride to the one run until the top of the fifth. The Pride scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-1 lead over the Bears.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hurley had an RBI single followed by a McKenna double with two RBI's to cut the Bears deficit, 8-3.

In the top of the top of the seventh, Wheeler and Allen both brought in runs to give Springfield the 10-3 final.

Junior Julia Ferris pitched the full game for the Bears with two strikeouts as she drops to 7-5.
