NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard softball dropped two to Babson in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action 6-1 and 8-4 Saturday afternoon at Nitchman Field.
The Bears fall to 13-11 on the season and 1-9 in the conference. The Beavers are now 14-8 overall and 6-4 in the NEWMAC.
GAME ONE: BABSON 6 COAST GUARD 1
Babson scored three runs in the top of the fourth to open up a 2-1 game on their way to the 6-1 victory in game on.
Babson was led by sophomore Josephine Mares who was 2-4 with a double, two RBI's and run scored. Freshman Annie Mitchell also 2-4 with a double and two RBI's while sophomore Annie Quine was 2-4 with a double and a RBI. Junior Samantha Smith had the Beavers other RBI going 2-3 with a run scored as well.
Babson got the scoring started in the top of the second as Mitchell singled to right field scoring senior Shannon Kortmann. Mares then singled to center field scoring freshman Jacqueline Paul giving the Beavers an early 2-0 lead.
The Bears gone one run back in the bottom of the second as Hindle stepped to the plate with runners on first and second. She singled right field bringing Bartz around to score and moving sophomore Sharayah Simco over to third making the score 2-1.
Babson however got three runs in the top of the fourth and one more in the top of the seventh while holding Coast Guard to three more hits for the 6-1 win.
Freshman Julia Ferris (6-1) pitched five innings allowing two earned runs on hits and striking out three. Freshman Kylie Vaverek pitched two innings of relief allowing one unearned runs on two hits and striking out two.
Junior Ali Reilly (6-4) pitched a complete game allowing one earned run on four hits and struck out five.
GAME TWO: BABSON 8 COAST GUARD 4
The Beavers used six runs in the third inning to carry themselves to an 8-4 victory over the Bears in game two of the NEWMAC double header.
Junior Casey Cruzpino was 1-3 with a double and two RBI's with a run scored. Freshman Courtney McKenna went 3-4 with and a double and two runs scored while junior Emma Hvozdovich was 1-3 with a double and a run scored.
Freshman Victoria Casey went 3-3 two RBI's and a run scored. Senior Leslie Moore went 1-2 a home run, one RBI and a run scored. Freshman Kayla Schinik, Quine, senior Meaghan Merullo, Paul and Mitchell each had an RBI as well.
With the game tied 1-1 at the end of the second, the Beavers erupted for six runs in the top of the third to take a 7-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by a solo home run by Moore and a two RBI single to center by Casey.
Babson pushed it 8-1 in the top of the fifth before Coast Guard mounted a comeback in the bottom of the sixth scoring three runs. Cruzpino doubled to center to score the first run of the inning plating Hvozdovich followed by a a throwing error by the third basemen bringing around both McKenna and Cruzpino.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bears had runners on second and third with one out but could not bring around either of the runs closing out their second loss of the day.
Vaverek (3-2) took the loss in game two pitching two and two third innings allowing six earned runs on eights. Ferris pitched four and a third innings of relief allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out one.
Freshman Brooke Stock (8-4) pitched a complete game for the win allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out three.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, April 11th, when they take on NESCAC foe, Trinity in non-conference action. First pitch of the double header is 3:00 pm.
