Defense costs Bears twice on Wednesday

KISSIMMEE, Fla.- The Coast Guard softball team had a rough Wednesday at the Rebel Spring Games as they dropped a pair of games to St. Norbert's (Minn.) and Bridgewater (Va.). Freshman Sammy Yuknat (1-2) took the loss in both contests. With the losses the Bears fall to 2-4 on the young season while St. Norbert (4-3) and Bridgewater (6-4) both improved their records.

Game one: St. Norbert 8, Coast Guard 7

In the opener the Bears jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the 1st but saw the lead slowly evaporate as the Green Knights whittled away to tie the game 7-7 in the 5th and win in walk off fashion on a Coast Guard error in the bottom of the 7th.

The Bears opened up the game in fine fashion. Freshman Morgan Kingston reached on an error, was sacrificed to 2nd by sophomore Erin Lisko, and came around to score on sophomore Jesse Richardson's RBI single.  The next four Bears reached base and scored, capped off by freshman Stephanie Figgins 2 RBI single that closed out the Bears scoring.

The Green Knights scored six runs in their first three offensive innings and eventually tied the game with an RBI single off of Sammy Yuknat who had replaced starter Christine Kahl. In the bottom of the 7th, St. Norbert's took advantage of a two out single by senior Steph Brunette who came around to score the game winning run on an error by Figgins.

Game two: Bridgewater (Va.) 6, Coast Guard, 4

In the second game the Bridgewater (VA) Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 lead, and even though the Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the 7th and brought the potential game-winning run to the plate in freshman Hannah Ingerson. However, Ingerson grounded out to the pitcher to end the threat and the game.

Richardson was outstanding at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. The Bears again struggled on defense, committing three errors, for a total of seven on the day in the two losses.

"It was a frustrating day all around. For a young team that had progressed on Monday we definitely took a step in the wrong direction" said Head Coach Donna Koczajowski. "We were unable to score outside of the 1st inning against St. Norbert's and against Bridgewater we did not get the bats going until it was too late. As they always do, errors hurt us as we gave the opposition extra opportunities which they capitalized on in both games," she continued, before adding, "Today's only highlight was freshman Sammy Yuknat, who entered the first game in relief and pitched well in the game against Bridgewater."

The Bears resume play at the Rebel Spring Games on Friday, March 15th, with a pair of contests against Transylvania (11:00 am) and Marietta (1:00 pm).
