Richardson Goes 6 for 6 as Bears Sweep MIT
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/14/12)--Freshman Jesse Richardson was 6 for 6 with five runs scored and senior All-American Hayley Feindel walked just one and struck out 20 to pick up a pair of wins moving into third place on the Division III all-time wins list as Coast Guard swept a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader from MIT with a 7-4 win in the opener and a 12-1 five inning win in the nightcap.
Feindel picked up the 113th and 114th wins of her career moving into third place in Division III history ahead of Kelly Schade from Simpson, who had 113 career wins.
Coast Guard improves to 18-12 overall and 6-6 in conference play while MIT drops to 7-18 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
In the opener, junior Stacia Sarwinski's three-run homer highlighted a five-run fifth inning as the Bears took a 7-0 lead. The Bears opened the scoring in the third on an RBI double by Richardson and an RBI single by junior Holli Bastinck before scoring five times in the fifth.
In the fifth, freshman Chloe Harmon had an RBI double and the Bears also scored a run on an error before Sarwinski's blast to right field her team-leading sixth of the season.
MIT freshman Ellie Fodor broke up the shutout with a three-run homer to right in the sixth before junior Anna Christensen's RBI ground out in the seventh scoring senior Jessica Iacobucci, who led off with a single, closed the scoring.
Feindel (10-6) went the distance to get the win in the game one allowing eight hits and four runs, three earned while walking one and striking out 12.
Fodor (4-7) took the loss for MIT as she went 4 1/3 innings allowing nine hits and seven runs, six earned with one walk and three strikeouts.
Richardson was 3 for 3 with a double and two runs scored while sophomore Kaitlin Ward had two hits in the game one win.
Iacobucci and Christensen each had two hits for the Engineers in the opener.
In game two, sophomore Devin Fellman led off the bottom of the first with her first of two homers in game and the Bears added a pair of runs as Richardson and Bastinck, who both singled came around on wild pitches for a 3-0 lead.
MIT got its run in the second, an unearned run as freshman Karly McLaughlin led off with a single, was bunted to second and scored on an outfield error following a single by Fodor.
The Bears put the game out of reach with seven runs in the third inning. Bastinck and Harmon had RBI singles before sophomore Kaitlin Ward's RBI double. Fellman hit a two-run shot to left field as the Bears took a 10-1 lead.
Feindel (11-6) allowed four hits and the unearned run while not walking a batter and striking out eight to get the win.
Iacobucci (2-9) worked the first two innings and allowed five hits and five earned runs to take the loss.
