Norfolk, VA – The coed sailing team finished their regatta and season on a strong note to climb back to twelfth place overall at the Gill Coed National Championship Finals. The Coed Finals were the culminating event of the eleven day spring national championships hosted by Old Dominion University.
Day one did not go as planned for the Coast Guard Academy Bears who struggled to find their rhythm in difficult conditions against the toughest fleet of the year. After twelve races in each division they found themselves in sixteenth overall, having sailed multiple double-digit races throughout the course of the day.
Having learned from their mistakes, the Bears were determined to claw their way back up the leaderboard on the final day of competition. Racing got underway in a light southwesterly and Coast Guard started to find their stride. After just four races, the Bears passed four teams that were ahead of them by posting all top-10 finishes.
Unfortunately the breeze did not cooperate and completely died to un-race able conditions. The race committee was unable to complete any additional races meaning the Bears were unable to ride that momentum they started the day with. They finished the regatta with 293 points for twelfth overall.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology won the regatta with 136 points to become the 2018 Coed National Champions.
