BOSTON, Mass. – The Coed Sailing Team finished fifth at the New England Coed Championship for the US Coast Guard Alumni Bowl and earned a berth to the ICSA Gill Coed National Championship Semi-Final. This marks the fourth straight year that the Bears will move onto both the Women's and Coed National Championship Semi-Finals.
Coast Guard was unable to keep that momentum going for the entire day, however, and suffered their worst four-race string of the regatta in the waning hours of Saturday's competition. They would sit in eighth place overnight, with nine teams advancing to the next stage.
The Bears came out of the gates strong on Sunday, winning race 11A and finishing sixth in race 11B. Although less consistent than their norm, the Bears went on to sail well in most of the remaining races and slowly climbed the leaderboard. They would finish the day comfortably in fifth place.
Nikole Barnes, Anna Morin, Austin Lettengarver, and Madelynn Widmeier finished ninth in A-Division with 141 points. In B-Division, Dana Rohde, Maddie Ekin, and Austin Lettengarver finished sixth with 120 points. The team combined for a total of 261 points.
Yale University won the 2017 US Coast Guard Alumni Bowl with Roger Williams University in second and Boston College in third. Along with these teams and the Bears, Boston University, Dartmouth College, Brown University, University of Rhode Island, and Tufts University will represent New England at the National Championship Semi-Finals which begin on May 31.
