Winter Named to All-Academic Team

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (August 2, 2016) – The Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) has named its 2015-16 All-Academic Sailing Team. The All-Academic Sailing Team recognizes collegiate sailors who have achieved excellence in national and inter-conference competition as well as excelling at the highest academic level for the 2015-16 academic year. Daniel Winter, a 2016 graduate of the Coast Guard Academy, was named to the team.

The criteria for the honorees are that he or she must be a Junior or Senior, have at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale, and be a starter or key reserve in at least seven university sponsored regattas.

A seven-person committee comprised of representatives from conferences in the ICSA evaluates the nominated sailors. This year's All-Academic Team is comprised of 146 members.

Winter, a four year member of the Coast Guard Academy Sailing Team, achieved All-Academic status his senior year by working hard both on the water and in the classroom. He competed in multiple regattas during the course of the 2015-2016 season, during most of which he spent mentoring younger members of the team to help prepare them for their future. He helped run countless home regattas during his tenure at Coast Guard and significantly contributed to the team's overall morale by leading off the water functions and activities.

An Operations Management and Computer Analysis Major, Winter graduted with high honors. He is now stationed on the US Coast Guard Cutter STRATTON in Alameda, CA.

"Dan was the ultimate team player and motivator who's role on the team will be hard to replace this upcoming season," commented head coach Brian Swingly. "I am extremely proud of him for being named an All-Academic team member, it's a well deserved honor for an outstanding student athlete."
