Frost Advances to National Championship
BOSTON, Mass.—(10/6/13)—For the second straight year, Christina Frost has earned a berth to the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship by finishing 4th at the New England Women's Singlehanded Championship hosted by Boston College. The National Championship will take place November 8-10 at Sail Newport in Newport, RI.
Conditions were variable on Boston Harbor throughout the weekend for the fourteen competitors who were battling for not only the conference title, but also six berths to nationals. Incredibly light and shifty breeze persisted all day on Saturday, during which both Frost and teammate Lauren Cefali got off to a great start, putting consistent scores on the board that kept them both in qualifying position. After the five races that were sailed on Saturday, Cefali was sitting in 4th with Frost in 5th.
On Sunday competitors had to battle the weather as well as each other. Driving rain, cold strong breeze, and unpredictable current were the theme of the day as eight more races were sailed to finish the championship. Frost continued her consistency on Sunday, keeping herself well within a qualifying position. Strong starts, boat speed, and smart sailing allowed her end the regatta with several top-5 finishes and a win in the last race of the series. Frost finished with 74 points.
Cefali found it harder to maintain consistency on Sunday and found herself slipping closer and closer to a non-qualifying position after several races outside of the top-10. Going into the final only three points from sixth, she went on the attack attempting to put a large enough gap between her and 6th place Rosalind Lesh from MIT. Although the points were there on the final beat, a large wind shift caused Cefali to lose position and slip towards the back of the fleet. She finished the regatta in 8th place with 104 points, just four away from a trip to Nationals.
Boston College's Erika Reineke, the 2012 National Champion, won the event with 24 points. Sky Adams from Brown was 2nd with 52 points and Urska Kosir was 3rd with 67 points. Along with these three and Frost, Carolyn Naughton from Boston College and Rosalind Lesh from MIT advance to the National Championship.
Frost's Nationals appearance will be her second and the Bears' fifth in the past six years. Last year the event was sailed in Long Beach, California where Frost finished 6th and just 10 points out of the top-5. As one of the strongest singlehanded sailors in the Nation, Frost will be a favorite for a podium position. She and her teammates will be training hard to prepare for the event in the coming weeks, which will be spectator friendly to fans and friends on Narragansett Bay in Newport.
