Bears 4th in Season Opener
CHARLESTON, S.C.—(2/17/13)—The sailing team opened their season with a fourth place at the Charleston Spring Interconference hosted by the College of Charleston this past weekend. Eight races were sailed in a variety of conditions, including unseasonably cold temperatures and wind in the 20 knot range for Sunday's six races.
B-Division skipper Avery Fanning with crews Jennifer Lane, Michael Caballero, and Andrew Britton sailed an incredibly consistent regatta and won their division by two points over the College of Charleston. They finished in the top-4 in all but one race and ended the regatta with a mere 28 points.
Dylan Finneran, Jaimie Chicoine, Bradley Milliken, and Caballero struggled to find the same consistency as their teammates and finished 11th in A-Division with 76 points.
At the USF Women's Interconference hosted by the University of South Florida, sailors were also surprised by cold temperatures and breezy conditions. Eight teams battled at this year's Nationals venue in a combined division format.
Most of the team will have the weekend off this week before the women's team heads to Charleston for their Women's Interconference and the coed team stays close to home for the Thames River Team Race Challenge, both happening on March 2-3. Fanning, Frost, and Lauren Cefali will compete in non-collegiate competition this upcoming weekend in the Laser Midwinter's East Championship hosted by Clearwater Yacht Club.
