Bears Add Thirteen to Intercollegiate Sailing Program
NEW LONDON, Ct.—Coast Guard Academy head sailing coach Brian Swingly welcomed thirteen new members to the intercollegiate sailing program as the Academy's class of 2016 reported to New London in late June.
Avery Fanning (Isle of Palms, SC) and Christina Frost (Nokomis, FL) both come to the Academy with a wealth of national and international singlehanded experience, along with several double handed high school competitions, and are expected to lead their class.
Fanning is a Laser Radial North American Champion (2011), was 2nd at both the 2010 and 2011 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta, 3rd at the Cressy High School Singlehanded National Championship and represented the United States at the 2011 Youth Radial Worlds.
On top of also representing her country at the 2011 Youth Radial Worlds, Frost was 2nd at the 2011 US Sailing Junior Women's Singlehanded Championship for the Leiter Trophy and 3rd female at the 2011 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta.
Kayla Ellis (Long Beach Township, NJ) comes to the Academy with experience in many disciplines of the sport, including many events at the top level on the International Lightning Circuit along with top finished at many singlehanded and high school events. Ellis was 29th out of 54 and top junior at the 2012 Lightning Midwinter Championship and 5th at the 2012 Laser 4.7 Midwinter's East Championship.
Andrew Britton (Palm Beach, FL) had a highly successful youth career as a crew and will add much needed depth to the program's crew pool. He competed at several of the top events, including the 2011 US Sailing Youth Championship.
Nick Odegard (Manhattan Beach, CA) and Robert Turley (Sturbridge, MA) also come to the Academy having raced on the national junior circuit and round out the recruiting class.
