NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Coast Guard Rifle closed out the first half of its season with an unblemished record in conference competition.
The second week of the annual Admiral's Cup Tournament saw the Bears defeat University of Sciences, SUNY Maritime, and Wentworth Institute of Technology led by sophomore Alexandria Harrington in smallbore and senior Nick Paisker in air rifle.
Harrington posted a 559 and was supported by freshman Dylan Lorence, 550, and fellow sophomores Randall Ford, 539, and Jacob Dupree, 536. This was Dupree's first appearance in the scoring four and he did it with a personal best helping the team to a 2186.
Sophomores Melissa Brizzi, Marshall Grant, and David Rose also shot personal bests of 539, 525, and 516 respectively while freshman Nyjah Turner scored a 536 personal high. High score of the match, a 579, was recorded by USCI's Sarah Schnupp.
Bear senior Nick Paisker's 584 was the top match score. Harrington put up a 565, Lorence a 553, and Ford a 550 for a team total of 2253, giving Coast Guard a 4438 aggregate. USCI was second followed by SUNY Maritime, and Wentworth. Personal bests in air were recorded by Grant, 563, Turner 554, Joseph Busching, 537, and Kaden Nichols, 528.
The team racked up three wins with a mediocre performance that was mediated by the strong showing of the Bear Cubs who shot personal bests left and right and seems to be harbinger of better things to come.
Coast Guard, now 9-5 on the season, and undefeated in conference action, will be idle until January 14th when they face the DI University of Alaska Fairbanks at the Palmyra Tournament in Palmyra, Pa.
