FT BENNING, Ga. –In the first of the three open matches, the Bears started the day competing in the Free Pistol match at the NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championships.
In the team match the Bears took an early lead and kept the lead throughout the competition. While it was a very close match between the Bears and Ohio State University, the Bears were victorious 2044 to 2041. The Black Knights of the U.S. Military Academy finished third with a 1959.
Senior Brian Kim finished the match in second place firing an outstanding 528. Senior Helen Oh finished the qualification round in third place with a 524 and freshman Ben Waalkes finished in eighth place with a 507. Rounding out the four-person scoring team was junior Johnny Ly with a 485.
Kim, Oh, and Waalkes all competed in the Free Pistol Final to determine the top eight final places. After the ten-shot final, Kim and Oh both kept their Silver and Bronze medal placing, while Waalkes moved up one place to seventh.
The women's team started the first of their two Championship events, competing in the afternoon in Sport Pistol and the Bears placed second behind MIT 1624 to 1585.
Bears team members were Oh with a 551, freshman Ella Firenzi with a 524, and sophomore Esther Choe with a 510.
Monday matches will be Standard Pistol in the morning, the second of the Open matches. In the afternoon Kim and junior Kevin Bennett will compete in the Men's Rapid-Fire Competition.
