NEW LONDON, Conn.– The Coast Guard women held off Army 2567-2565 to highlight the season-opening weekend.
Sophomore Helen Oh was the top shooter in all three events to lead the Bears as she shot 377 in air and 555 in sport.
The Bears, who led by five points entering the day, lost the aggregate to the Black Knights 6308-6261 as Oh again led all three event by firing a 559 in air, 522 in free and 520 in standard.
It was the Bears best score in the past four seasons.
The Bears handed the Black Knights their first loss of the weekend, when they defeated Army 2005 to 1976 in Free Pistol, led by Sophomore Helen Oh with a 522.
Army rebounded with a 24 victory over the Bears in Air Pistol. Again, Oh led all competitors with a 559. With a five point lead going into the last event, the Standard Pistol event, Coach Hawkins thought the Bears would do something that hasn't been done in a long time, defeat Army. It wasn't meant to be, West Point shot a solid 2132 to the Bears 2080, to defeat Coast Guard by 47 points in the grand aggregate.
Helen Oh led all competitors in Air-559, Free-512, and Standard Pistol-538, firing a combined aggregate score of 1619.
In Women's Air Pistol, Oh fired an excellent score of 377 to lead the women's team to victory firing a team score of 1078 against the Black Knight's 1065. Oh led the way in Sport Pistol with a 555 for a team score of 1579 against the West Point, 1500. The Bears women's defeated West Point in the women's aggregate competition, 2657 to 2565. Oh was the high woman shooter for the Bears with a cumulative score of 932.
The Bears are back on in action when they host Navy on Oct. 15-16.
