NEW LONDON, Conn. -- After a disappointing loss to MIT last weekend, the Bears Pistol swept the competition at home this weekend, competing against USMMA and Yale.
In the Aggregate Open Pistol competition, the Bears soundly defeated the Mariners and the Bulldogs, 6227, 5783, and 3327, respectively.
The Bears and the Mariners battled it out Friday evening in Free Pistol, with the Bears on top for a 1929 to 1876 win. Freshman Helen Oh was high shooter for the Bears with a 500. The scoring team was all freshmen, with Saranjoe Sukcha (481), Brian Kim (479), and Reid Wiegleb (469) being the other members of the four-person scoring team.
Saturday morning, the Bears opened up against USMMA and Yale in Air Pistol, the Bears defeated both the Mariners and the Bulldogs, 2167 to 1983 to 1818, respectively. Freshman Helen Oh led the Bears with a 560, one point off of her Academy Record fired last month. Sophomore Kevin Lennox (533), Sukcha (528), and 534 Kim (546), rounded out the team.
Saturday afternoon, the Bears shot a superb Standard Pistol score, shooting a 2131, to the Mariner's 1924, and the Bulldog's 1509. Brian Kim fired a new Academy Record, 556, eclipsing the 25 year old record previously held by Kevin Gavin, '91. Oh also fired a nice score, a 550, with Lennox firing a 521, and Wiegleb with a 504.
In the Women's events, the Lady Bears bested a two year old Academy Record in the Women's Team Aggregate events, 2665. Helen Oh fired a 374 Air Pistol score, only two points off of her own record. Sophomore Van Hise (339) and Freshman Mary Carr (341) rounded out the three person team. In Women's Sport Pistol, Oh fired an outstanding 572, with Carr (529) and Freshman Annika Lehenbauer (510), for a team score of 1611.
With these two wins, this brought the Bears record back to 4-4.
They compete this coming weekend at West Point in the Collegiate Sectionals against West Point, Yale, and USMMA.
The Collegiate Sectional determines which teams and individuals receive invitations to the National Championships on March 14-17.
