Coast Guard Picked Third in NEWMAC Coaches' Poll

BOSTON, Mass. – Returning three of their top five runners from last season, the bears were picked third in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Cross Country Preseason Coaches' Poll.

The Bears received 42 points in the vote, just four points behind second place WPI.

Three runners that placed last season at the NEWMAC championship will be leading the team this season. All-conference performer Zachary Velasquez, who placed ninth last season with a time of 26:08 will look to build on a strong sophomore campaign. Junior Caleb Teachout (26:55)  was 18th while senior Kevin Petow (27:09) placed 23rd last season for Coast Guard.

The Bears will also return sophomores Andrew Brown and Brett Foster, who ran for the Bears at the regional championship last season.

After claiming the programs 17th consecutive NEWMAC crown in 2014, MIT has been selected as the preseason favorite with six first place votes and 53 total.

2014 runner-ups, WPI, came in second with one first place vote and 46 total, while Wheaton (Mass.) took fourth with 37 points. Round out the remaining slots was #5 Springfield ((1) 35), #6 Babson (33), #7 Clark (17) and #8 Emerson (12).

Coast Guard opens the season on September 12th at the Trinity Invitational.
