Bears Place 2nd at NEWMAC's; Five Earn All-Conference Honors

BOSTON, Mass.—The Bears placed three runners in the top ten and five Coast Guard runners earned All-conference honors as Coast Guard placed second at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships at Franklin Park.

Senior Gary Ezzo was third overall with a time of 25:35.28 to earn All-conference honors for the third straight season. He placed third last year when he was the only Coast Guard finisher in the top 20 when the Bears placed fourth.

The second place finish for Coast Guard was its best since 2010 when the Bears also placed second. The Bears placed five runners in top 14 for the first time since 2005.

Freshman Zach Valasquez was 7th in 25:59.48 while junior Joe O'Connell placed ninth finishing the 8K course in 26:04.10. Juniors Jon Lash (26:17.19) and Stephen Horvath (26:27.11) were 13th and 14th respectively to all earn All-conference honors for the first time while senior Brad Pienta placed 18th with a time of 26:31.38 to also finish in the top 20.

MIT won the championship for the 16th straight season as the Engineers finished with 18 points while Coast Guard finished with 44 points well ahead of third place WPI which finished with 96 points.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday when the compete at the ECAC Championship at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I.
