NEW LONDON, Conn.-Sophomore Ben Hannon was first in the 100 meters running 11.42 and anchored the 4x4 relay team for the Coast Guard men's track and field team at the Slifen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College today.
Hannon was joined in the relay by sophomores Kelcey Smith, Joe Kelly, and James Dawkins. The 4x4 finished 2nd running 3:25.95. Freshman Fred Higgins had a strong day, placing 3rd in the 200 meters (23.48) and 5th in the 400 meters (51.14).
Junior Jordan Lee was second in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:54.52. Also in the running events, sophomore Joey O'Connell took 3rd in the 5000 meter run, crossing the finish in 15:43.57.
In the pole vault Coast Guard took the top 3 spots with senior Ian Sankey in 3rd (12' 7.5"), freshman Matt Navetta in 2nd (13'7.25") and junior Ben Wolhaupter soaring into first with a best mark of 15'7".
In other field events, senior Will Baker took 3rd place in the discus throwing 136'7" and 4th in hammer with a best mark of 144'. Also, sophomore Joel MacArthur took second place in the javelin throwing 164'1".
Coast Guard took second in the meet, scoring 120 points out of 11 teams. Rhode Island College took first with 183 points.
The team returns to the oval on Saturday, April 27th when they travel to Springfield College for the NEWMAC Championships.
