NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.-Coast Guard's trio of captains led the Bears to a third place finish for the day at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational. Junior captain Ben Wolhaupter took first in the pole vault by clearing 14' 9". Also in the field events, senior captain Will Baker won the discus throw on his final attempt with a toss of 150' 10". Baker also placed second in the hammer throw with a mark of 147' 3". Sophomore Joel MacArthur placed third in the javelin with a top throw of 165' 4".
The third place finish by the Bears was behind only UMass Dartmouth and Brigewater State in the 13 team invitational.
On the track, sophomore Stephen Horvath won the 5000 meters running 16:01.21 and junior captain Brad Pienta took second with a time of 16:05.46. Sophomore Joey O'Connell was the third place finisher in the 10,000 meter run crossing the line in 33:08.67. Junior Jordan Lee was fifth in the 1500 meter run in 4:15.47.
In the sprinting events, junior Adam Scalesse and sophomore Ben Hannon placed third and fourth, in the 400 meters running 50.90 and 51.10, respectively. Sophomore James Dawkins took a fifth place spot in the 200 meters in 23.22 with Hannon in sixth with 23.24. The Bears ran their first 4x100 relay of the season and took second with a time of 44.63.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, April 13th for a tri-meet with WPI hosted by Springfield College.
