2013-14 Men's Swimming Season Preview

2013-14 Men's Swimming Season Preview

The 2013-14 Bears will look to move up the leader board at the NEWMAC championship meet. They placed 3rd last year and will look to edge closer to the top. The men are lead by senior captains Barrett Johannsen and Marco Tinari.

Joining the captains are seniors Jacob Kramb and Marc McAndrew. Tinari is a distance freestyle and 400 Individual Medley specialist who is showing signs of sprint versatility and will compete quite a bit in the short relays. Johannsen is a butterfly NEWMAC finalist who will swim a bit of IM and sprint freestyle. McAndrew and Kramb are both critical to the men's success with abilities in distance freestyle and backstroke events.

Returning to the team are two key contributors from last season, junior Christian Brindamour and sophomore Andy Anderson. Both broke CGA school records in 2013 and represented the Academy at NCAA competition. Andy broke the oldest standing school record on the 3-meter board and was an invitee to NCAA regional competition as a freshman. Brindamour earned All-America Honorable Mention last year at the NCAA Championships. He set three new CGA records in the 50 and 100 freestyles and 100 backstroke and returns as the NEWMAC runner up in both the 500 and 100 free. Also returning are key contributors Ben Morseth, Tim Dion and Ryan Buys. Each of these will be front line contributors to the success of the men's program.

A flood of talent arrived in July with the arrival of the class of 2017. High school All-Americans, Junior National competitors and YMCA national contests comprise the freshman class. They are deep and versatile and should make an immediate impact on the conference championship level.

The first semester will bring an immediate match-up between NEWMAC runner-up Springfield College and the Bears. This is followed by conference dual meets against a stronger Wheaton College and a rapidly improving WPI. The semester will conclude with a championship format invitational at WPI (who will host this season's conference championship). Second semester will focus on the preparation for the conference meet and hopefully NCAA championships in Indianapolis.
