SCHENECTADY, N.Y.-The Coast Guard men's swimming and diving team won four of 11 events at the 2013 edition of the Union Relays on Saturday. While winning four, the Bears placed second in the other seven events en route to a second place finish.Union won the overall team title with 128 points, narrowly edging out Coast Guard's 126, and Montclair State placed third with 78 points.
The 300 Breaststroke Relay team of freshmen Elliot VanDeren, Carl Fuhs, and sophomore Timothy Dion were able to get the winning started with a time of 3:11.80. In the next event a team of junior Ryan Buys, freshman Londen Thomas, and senior Barrett Johannsen won the 300 Butterfly Relay with a time of 2:40.32.
The 600 Medley 200 IM Relay team of VanDeren, sophomore Ben Morseth, and freshman Zachary Weeks won the event with a time of 6:09.48. The Bears' final victory of the day came in the 400 Freestyle Relay where the team of Thomas, junior Christian Brindamour, freshman Aaron Overheim, and senior Marco Tinari won with a time of 3:18.64.
Two of the second place finishes for the Bears came in the 3 Meter Diving Relay and 1 Meter Diving Relay where sophomore Andy Anderson posted second place scores of 382.64 and 347.09, respectively.
The other second place finishes came in the 400 Medley Relay (3:45.74, Weeks, Fuhs, Johannsen, Brindamour), 300 Backstroke Relay (2:51.53, Morseth, Weeks, senior Jacob Kramb), 500 Freestyle Relay (4:18.39, Brindamour, Thomas, Dion, Tinari), 200 Freestyle Relay (1:29.82, Overheim, Tinari, Thomas, Brindamour), and 200 Medley Relay (1:41.79, Kramb, Fuhs, Buys, Morseth).
Coast Guard returns to action on Saturday, November 2nd when they travel to Springfield to take on Rhode Island and Springfield.
