Bears Take 2nd Place at NEWMAC Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-(2/19/2012)--Coast Guard placed second for the fourth straight season at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships.

MIT successfully defended the championship as the Engineers led from start to finish to claim the 2012 title. MIT won its fifth straight title, scoring 1,219 points. The Bears finished second with 735 points.

Three of the Bears relay teams earned All-conference honors with second place finishes.

Senior Johnson Knox has been part of all three relay teams that earned All-conference this weekend.

The 200 freestyle relay team is on of freshman Christian Brindamour and seniors Knox, Brian McGuiness and Dan Beshoar placed second in 1:23.83. They posted an NCAA B cut time of 1:23.11 in the time trial on Sunday night. Brindamour's lead off leg time of 20.93 was the fastest freshman time in Coast Guard history. The relay team is on the bubble for a spot at the NCAA Championships.

The 400 medley relay team of seniors Bryan Andrews, Knox, Preston Strobel and McGuiness were second with a time of 3:27.44.

The 200 medley relay of Beshoar, freshman Derrian Duryea, Strobel and Knox placed second with a school-record time of 1:33.31.

Junior Kevin Smit broke the school record in the 200 IM with a time an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:53.99 to place fifth as well as posting B times in the 400 IM (4:04.53) and 200 butterfly (1:51.90).

Also for the Bears, junior Nick Poehler and sophomore Marco Tinari had NCAA B cut times in the 1650 freestyle with times of 16:07.17 and 16:13.58 respectively.
