NEW LONDON, Conn.--(2/22/12)--Coast Guard freshman Derrian Duryea has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Rookie of the Year for his performance at the NEWMAC Championship meet this past weekend at MIT.
Duryea placed third in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.28), fourth in the 100 breaststroke (58.66) and 12th in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.12, the top freshman in all three events.
He was also part of the 200 medley relay team which earned All-conference honors with a second place finish setting a school-record with a time of 1:33.31.
Duryea is the second Coast Guard men's swimmer to win NEWMAC Rookie of the Year honors as Nick Poehler won the award in 2010.
Coast Guard placed second for the fourth straight season.
