NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Robbie Fugett scored his first career goal in the second half, leading the Bears to a 1-0 victory over Merchant Marine Saturday afternoon.
Combined with the points earned by the men's and women's cross country team today, Coast Guard now has a 3-0 lead on Merchant Marine in the race for the Superintendent's Trophy.
The Bears earn their first victory of the season moving to 1-1-2, while the Mariners lose for the first time this season and fall to 2-1.
Fugett becomes the second freshman to have his first collegiate goal be a game winner against Merchant Marine as then freshman Luke Telang scored in 2014, leading the Bears to a 1-0 victory and the team's last win against the Mariners. Senior Greg Burnham assisted on the game winner.
After a scoreless first half, Coast Guard looked to take the lead in the 63rdminute as senior Alex Hall fired home a rebound from sophomore Noa Pagatpatan's initial shot that was saved by junior Matthew Milner. Hall was however called offside, negating the goal and keeping the game scoreless.
Just over ten minutes later, the Bears found the back of the net as sophomore Daniel Taglianetti served in a corner kick from the right side. Burnham collected the cross and fired a shot on goal that was blocked by a Merchant Marine defender. Fugett jumped on the rebound and one-timed it into the back of the net for what proved to be the game winner.
The Mariners continued to press late into the half, but could not find the equalizer, giving Coast Guard their first win of the season.
Junior Dakota Harich (1-1-1) made one save on one shot on goal for his first shutout of the season.
Milner (2-1-0) made three saves on four shots on goal allowing his first goal of the season.
Coast Guard is back in action on Tuesday, September 11th, when they travel to Danbury, Connecticut to take on the Western Connecticut Colonials. Opening kickoff is 6:00.
