AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Austin Read had been selected to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America™ Men's Soccer First Team. This team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
This is the second straight year that Read earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors as he we was named to the tird team last season.
Read becomes the first two-time Academic All-America selection since Steve Blum was selected in both 2007 and 2008. He also earns first team honors for the first time since Sarah Jane Otey in 2012.
Read, an Electrical Engineering major, earned NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Year honors after a stellar season anchoring the Bears back four. He led a Coast Guard defense that was 12th in the nation in shutout percentage (.611), second in the conference and 18th in the nation in goals against average (0.58) and second in the conference in total shutouts (11). Read is a three time All-NEWMAC and NEWMAC All-Academic selection. He has started 71 of 73 games in his collegiate career tallying 26 points on 12 goals and two assists.
Read was also a United Soccer Coaches (previously NSCAA) NCAA Division III Men's All-New England Second Team selection and took part in the NEISL Senior Bowl after leading the Bears to their first 10 win season since 2014.
This is the seventh year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
