NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Coast Guard men's soccer team earned their seventh shutout of the season, blanking non-conference foe CCNY 5-0 Monday evening.
With the win, the Bears improve to 7-2-1 on the season while the Beavers fall 0-9-0 overall.
Junior Alex Hall led the way with two goals for Coast Guard while junior Griffin Klages tallied one and freshman Seth Anderson scored his first collegiate goal. The Bears fifth goal came off an own goal. Senior Ryan Dandan and junior Patrick Palermo-Re each had one assist.
Coast Guard scored their first goal of the game in the 13th minute when Hall fired a shot from the right side of the penalty box that was knocked down by junior goalkeeper Marcus De Pompeis. Hall quickly collected the rebound and fired a one touch goal into the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.
Hall scored his second of the game in the 24th minute when Palermo-Re slipped a ball through the back line to him. Hall took a touch and dispatched it in the bottom right corner for his second of the game and third of the season.
Klages scored Coast Guard's final goal of the half in the 31st minute as Dandan sent a cross in from the left side. Klages met the cross and fired it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season and the 3-0 lead going into the half.
Anderson was the final goal scorer for the Bears in the second half as he hustled to close down De Pompeis and slid in before he was able to clear the ball out of play. Anderson quickly popped up, gathered his deflection and placed it in the back of the net for a 4-0 advantage in the 66th minute.
The fifth and final goal was an own goal in the 83rd minute wrapping up Coast Guard's seventh win of the season.
De Pompeis (0-7-0) made nine saves on 14 shots on goal allowing the five scores.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday, October 7th when they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts to take on the Clark Cougars in NEWMAC action. Opening kickoff is 1:00.
