NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Austin Read's goal in the 62nd minute proved to be the game winner as Coast Guard won their third straight game downing Western CT 1-0 Tuesday night in non-conference action.
With the win the Bears improve to 3-1 while the Colonials drop to 2-3.
Read's game winning goal was his first of the season. Junior Patrick Palermo-Re had the assist which was his first of the year.
The first half saw few serious chances as the Bears best opportunity came early on in the half as sophomore Gio Ottomanelli attempted a quick heal pass at the top of the penalty box to senior Luke Telang. Ottomanelli was able to split the defense but hit the pass to hard and into the hands of the keeper.
After the first half ended scoreless, Coast Guard started the second half strong pushing the pace in the offensive end. Ottomanelli received a pass at the top of the penalty box in the 55th minute. He took the pass across his body and attempted to put a shot on goal but the shot was blocked and knocked out of play for a corner.
Just over two minutes late Western CT lined up a free just outside the Bears penalty box. Senior Nick Kyriakidis lifted a shot over the Coast Guard wall curling towards the left side of the net. Senior goalkeeper Jake Sorenson dove to his left to the make the save and the Colonials attack.
In the 62nd minute Palermo-Re was able to draw a foul just outside the Western CT penalty box on the right side. Palermo-Re served the ball to the back post off the set piece. Read rose up over a defender and drove the header into the back of the net for what proved to be the game winner.
The Colonial made one last effort late in the game as Darion Richeme took a shot in the 90th minute towards the right post, but put it just to the outside of the post for the final play of the game.
Senior Jake Sorenson (3-0) notched his second consecutive shutout making three saves on three shots on goal. Sorenson and the rest of the Coast Guard defense have been off to a strong start this season allowing no goals in regulation, with three total shutouts and a team total .24 goals against average.
Junior Luca DiCario started in goal for Western CT making one save on shot on goal. Freshman Daniel Szabo (0-2) took the loss in the second half making two saves on three shots on goal and allowing the lone tally.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, September 16th, when they jump into NEWMAC play with a road game against the Springfield Pride. Opening kickoff is 11:30.
