AUSTIN, Texas - Junior Austin Read had been selected to the 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America™ Men's Soccer Third Team. This team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Read is a Electrical Engineering major that led Coast Guard to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) quarterfinals and a final record of 9-6-3. The co-captain has started 53 games while at the Academy scoring 10 goals and recording two assists. He is at the center of a defense that tallied a .97 goals against average and eight shutouts this season.
Read is the first Academic All-American selection since Adam Scalesse (second team) and Ben Wolhaupter (third team) both were named Academic-All Americans as members of the Coast Guard track & field team in 2014.
This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
