Junior Austin Read had been selected to the 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District™ Men's Soccer First Team. This team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Read is a Electrical Engineering major that has led Coast Guard, ranked 11th in New England, to a 9-4-3 record this season. The co-captain has started 51 games while at the Academy scoring nine goals and recording two assists. He is at the center of a defense that has .78 goals against average and eight shutouts this season.
Read is the first Academic All-District First Team selection since Adam Scalesse and Ben Wolhaupter both made the All-District First Team as members of the Coast Guard track & field team in 2014.
Since Read was named a First-team Academic All-District™ honoree, he advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month. This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
