BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomore Max DeLuca's goal 31 minutes into the first half was enough to propel the Emerson men's soccer team to their first ever NEWMAC win, topping Coast Guard 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field.
With the loss, the Bears slip to 8-3-1 overall and 2-2 against NEWMAC opponents while the Lions improves to 3-7 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
Emerson junior goalkeeper Lucas Fischer recorded his second shutout of the season and improved to 3-7, making four saves on four shots on goal.
The Lions scored the games lone goal in the latter half of the first period as senior Samir Beria recovered the ball at midfield and sent a pass to senior Duncan Bochicchio. Bochicchio took Beria's pass and hit it out wide to DeLuca on the right side. DeLuca fired as shot into the top left corner past the reach of Harich at the 30:43 mark.
In the 69th minute the Bears nearly tied the game as a shot by the Bears beat Fischer into the bottom left corner. The goal, however, was waived off due to offsides.
The Lions maintained possession through much of the second half using nine fouls and three yellow cards to slow the pace of the game securing the 1-0 victory over the Bears, for the programs first conference victory.
