NEW LONDON, Conn.- Coast Guard scored three goals in each half to earn a 6-0 victory over cross town opponent Mitchell in nonconference action.
With the the win the Bears snap a two game skid improving their record to 6-2-1 on the year. The Mariners stay winless on the season and fall to 0-6-1.
Coast Guard got the scoring started early in the match off a free kick just 3:07 into the match. Senior Alex Lane and Caelan Harshaw and junior Luke Telang all stepped up to take a free kick. Both Harshaw and Telang ran over the ball and Lane stepped up and slotted a ball to the left of Mitchell's wall. The pass found Telang who continued his run and one timed it into the back of the net for his third goal of the year.
Harshaw scored the Bear's second goal of the game in the 39th minute as Telang got free on the right side of the Mariner's penalty box. Telang sent a rolling service across the front of the goal which found the feet of Harshaw just outside the six yard box. Harshaw took a shot that was blocked but came right back to the feet of Harshaw who then one timed a looping shot over the head of the goalie and into the back of the net for his second goal of the year.
Junior Austin Read finished off the scoring for the half as he stepped up to take a penalty kick and drilled a shot towards the left corner. Freshman Seth Strader dove and got his hands to the shot but was unable to stop it from finding the back of the net for Read's second goal of the season making the half time score 3-0.
Read scored again just over three minutes into the second half as Lane hit a corner kick to the center of Mitchell's penalty box. Read rose up in the crowd and headed it home for his third goal of the season.
Harshaw stepped up next to score his second goal of the game in the 62nd minute off a corner kick. Sophomore Patrick Palermo-Re sent a corner kick towards the Mariner's front post. Harshaw met the service and then used a heel flick to the back post to score the fifth goal of the game and his third of the season.
Sophomore Griffin Klages and freshman Taka Lendon each had career firsts for the Bear's final goal as Lendon found Klages with a pass on the left side of Mitchell's penalty box. Klages took a touch and hit a shot past Strader into the upper corner of the near post for his first career goal and Lendon's first career assist with 75:19 left on the clock making the final score 6-0.
Freshman Dakota Harich (2-0) tallied his first career shutout making two saves on two shots on goal. That is the teams sixth shutout of the season.
Strader (0-5) made six saves on 12 shots on goal.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday, October 1st as they host MIT for homecoming weekend and a key NEWMAC match. Game time is 11:00.
