BABSON PARK, Mass. – Coast Guard used a goal in each half to down reigning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament champion Babson, 2-0 in the Bear's first conference game of the season.
With the win Coast Guard stays unbeaten on the season at 5-0-1 overall and 1-0 in the NEWMAC. The Beavers drop their third game of the season (2-3-1, 0-1).
This is only the seventh time the Bears have beaten Babson in 48 meetings and the first time since 1981 that Coast Guard's margin of victory was more than one.
The first half looked headed to a scoreless intermission before sophomore Alex Hall scored an unassisted goal with 49 seconds left in the period.
The Bears used another late goal in the second half to seal the win as senior Alex Lane found junior Ryan Dandan for his first goal of the season. That was Lane's first assist of the season and his team leading seventh point of the year.
Junior Jake Sorenson (3-0-1) made two saves on two shots on goal. Coast Guard's defense continues to be a dominant unit as they have only allowed a single goal through the first six games of the season. The Bears are top five in the country in team goals against average (0.16), and shutout percentage (.83).
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, September 20th, when they play cross street rival Connecticut College in the battle for the Whale Cup. Kickoff is 4:00 pm.
