Bears Earn #2 Seed in ECAC Tournament

NEW LONDON, Conn.—For the sixth time in the last ten years, the Coast Guard men's soccer team has earned a berth to the ECAC New England Division III New England tournament. The Bears will be the second seed and host seventh-seeded Western New England University in the first round tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The tournament was scheduled to begin on Wednesday, but the game has been moved up due to the bad weather expected on Wednesday and Thursday.

This is the first postseason appearance for Coast Guard since 2008 when they won the ECAC Championship with a 1-0 home win over Eastern Connecticut in the championship game.

This is Coast Guard's sixth trip to the ECAC tournament under head coach Chris Parsons, in his 11th season. Parsons led the Bears to ECAC tournament appearances in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Coast Guard advanced to the semifinals in both 2003 and 2004.

Coast Guard is coming off back-to-back losses for the first time all season. The Bears, who finished second in the NEWMAC during the regular season with a conference record of 4-1-1, lost to Babson 4-0 in the regular season finale and fell to Springfield 2-0 in the NEWMAC semifinals.

The Bears, 11-6-1 overall, balanced scoring attack is led by senior defender Greg Kennerley who has a team-high 12 points, with four goals and four assists. Junior Joe Bodzewski leads the team with five goals while sophomore John Tarzian has netted four. Junior goalkeeper Richie Burns (10-4-1) has been outstanding all season long posting four shutouts and holding just a 0.85 goals against average. Burns has twice been named NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Western New England was 9-8-3 overall and 4-3-2 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference, losing to Nichols 2-1 in the conference tournament quarterfinals.

Other first round matchups are top-seeded Roger Williams hosting eighth-seeded Lesley, fourth-seeded Norwich will host fifth-seeded Husson and third-seeded Lasell will host sixth-seeded Endicott.

The semifinals and championship will be played on Saturday and Sunday, at the highest remaining seed entering the weekend.
