NEW LONDON, CT. – Three second half free kicks off the foot of senior Greg Kennerley all led to goals as Coast Guard beat Albertus Magnus College, 3-1, in non-conference action. Win the win the Bears improve to 8-3-1 on the year while the Falcons fall to 11-2-2.
Kennerley put a free kick from just inside midfield to the far post of the Falcons goal that found the head of sophomore John Tarzian for the game's first goal in the 52nd minute. Just five minutes later it was Kennerley again sending a free kick from just beyond midfield, this time finding junior forward Matt Epperly for an acrobatic header to give the Bears a 2-0 cushion.
Albertus Magnus continued to pressure the ball and were able to capitalize on a Coast Guard mistake to cut the lead in half in the 61st minute. Bears goalie Richie Burns attempted to clear the ball out of the box but Falcons senior forward, Stephen Zapata, stepped in front of the clearing attempt, deflecting the ball into the back of the for his ninth goal of the season.
Three minutes later, Kennerley and Tarzian hooked up again on what was a mirror image from the first goal, giving the Bears an insurance tally on their way to the 3-1 victory. The goal was Tarzian's second of the game and his third of the season.
Both teams squandered opportunities in the first half to break a scoreless tie. In the 9th minute, Coast Guard sophomore Matthew Bogdan sent a corner kick into the box that found junior Joe Bodzewski. Bodzewski deflected the cross towards the Albertus Magnus goal, forcing junior keeper Donato Piroscafo to make a diving stop.
In the 34th minute, the Falcons had four consecutive corner kicks but were only able to muster one shot off of them, an Angel Velazquez rocket that sailed high over the crossbar.
The Bears, who outshot Albertus Magnus 15-10, are now 5-0-1 in their last six games.
Piroscafo made five stops for the Falcons while Burns had to make three saves in the win for the Bears.
Coast Guard returns to action on Saturday, October 13th as they travel across town to play Mitchell College at noon. Albertus Magnus will travel to Lasell College on Saturday for a 2:30p kickoff.
