NEW LONDON, Conn.--Junior Kyle Grell had a goal and an assist as Coast Guard shutout Massachusetts Maritime 4-0 in a non-conference game.
The Bears, winners of three of their last four, improve to 5-3 on the season while Mass. Maritime drops to 4-3-1 on the year.
Coast Guard wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Grell scored just two minutes and 43 seconds into match with classmate Joe Bodzewski assisting for the 1-0 lead.
Sophomore John Tarzian's header in the 13th minute gave Coast Guard a 2-0 lead. Junior John Rendon and senior Greg Kennerley assisted for the Bears.
Junior Robert Copeland added a header of his own off a corner kick from sophomore Matthew Bogdan in the 21st minute to increase the lead to 3-0. It was Bogdans' team-leading fourth assist of the season.
Junior Matt Epperly tallied his first goal of the season in the 62nd minute when he took a cross from Grell as the Bears took a 4-0 lead.
Coast Guard outshot Mass. Maritime 12-5.
Sophomore Richie Burns, the reigning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Defensive Player of the Week, made one save to improve his record to 5-1 on the season. Sophomore Carlos Gonzalez also made a save for the Bears.
Senior Brett Young (4-3-1) made four saves in goal for the Buccaneers while sophomore Andrew Brown made a pair of saves.
Coast Guard is back in action when they travel to Clark for a NEWMAC game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
