Heaney Scores Twice to Lead Men's Soccer to 3-0 Win
GOREHAM, Maine--Junior Walter Heaney scored a pair of goals to help Coast Guard shutout the host University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-0 in the second day of play in the USM Men's Soccer Classic at Hannaford Field.
The Bears dominated the youthful Huskies outshooting the host side 20-3 and piling up a 12-0 margin in corner kicks.
Senior Greg Kennerley gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute with a 12-yard blast past USM freshman goalkeeper Korey Mulherin.
Heaney made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute with his long, arcing shot over Mulherin. Heaney completed the scoring in the 58th minute heading home a cross from the left wing by sophomore Matthew Bogdan.
Coast Guard sophomore goalkeeper Richie Burns did not have to record a save in the shutout. Mulherin had five saves in the first half before giving way to senior Jeremy Turner at halftime. Turner registered two saves over the final 45 minutes.
Kennerley, Matt Epperly and John Rendon were named to the All-tournament team for the Bears.
"This was a great win after a tough result on Friday," said Coast Guard head coach Chris Parsons. "We moved the ball incredibly well today and created multiple chances in each half. The first goal by Kennerley was really driven home, and Heany's goals were really well taken. I couldnt be happier with the team's performance and I am looking forward the Merchant Marine game next weekend."
