WORCESTER, MASS.--(9/24/11)--Freshman Oscar Zapata scored the game-tying goal in the 59th minute and host Clark and Coast Guard settled for 1-1 tie in a New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
With the result, the Cougars now stand at 4-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league play, while the Bears are 4-2-1 and sport the same league mark as Clark.
The game was remarkably even, as Coast Guard held an 11-10 edge in shots and the Cougars had more corner kicks (7-6). Even the fouls were close, as the teams were whistled for 18 and 17 and each goalkeeper – Coast Guard freshman Richard Burns and Clark's Ryan King each sent away five shots.
The Bears' took a 1-0 lead with some beautiful passing in the 30th minute. Joe Bodzewski was on the move on the right side when he sent a cross to Bett Godiksen - who rather than shooting a shot directly at the Clark keeper - touched a pass to his left to Bobby Copeland for his second goal of the season.
Each team had scoring chances throughout the contest but couldn't convert. The Cougars had an excellent scoring opportunity in the 21st minute when Josh Demers headed a ball in the box to Adrian Blackadar, but the senior couldn't gather himself for the point blank shot.
Blackadar had another good look in the 56th minute when he gathered a loose ball in the box but his attempt just sailed over the crossbar.
Coast Guard, meanwhile, had a scoring chance in the 27th minute when Matthew Bodagan headed a ball on net that King was able to deflect with a few fingers to keep the game scoreless.
Bodzewski had a chance in the 83rd minute when he got behind the defense and King, but he was only able to get a piece of the ball, allowing Ian Daly to clear it away.
Clark finally got on the board when Blackadar sent a long pass to Zapata, who beat his defender and chipped a shot over the head of Burns for his team-leading fifth goal.
