IRVINE, Cal. – Third-seeded Dayton jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter, led 7-2 at halftime and held off a late charge by 14th seeded Bears beating Coast Guard 12-9 in the first round of the MCLA National Tournament at UC-Irvine, its final game as a club program.
Dayton extended its lead to 11-3 after three quarters before Coast Guard outscored the Flyers 6-1 in the fourth and final quarter.
The Bears, who advanced to the second round of the MCLA National Tournament last season, drop to 11-5 after winning the Pioneer Collegiate Lacrosse League (PCLL) Division II tournament championship.
Coast Guard will elevate its men's lacrosse program to Division III status next year and the Bears will compete in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).
The Bears will face Western Washington in the consolation bracket on Tuesday at 2 p.m. EST.
