NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Eric Schmid, playing in the final home game of his career, scored three of his five goals in the first quarter and also added four assists in the game leading Coast Guard to a 21-11 win over New Haven on a foggy night in the first round of the Pioneer Collegiate Lacrosse League (PCLL) Division II tournament.
Senior Stuart Carley also had four goals while junior Pat Dreiss and freshman Curtis Blaise scored three times each. Junior John Tarzian had six assists in the win for Coast Guard.
The Bears, who improve to 9-4 on the season, will now take on Stonehill in the PCLL tournament semifinals on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Brown University. The championship game will be played on Sunday at noon.
Coast Guard beat Stonehill during the regular season 8-7 on Apr. 13th.
Schmid scored a hat trick in the first quarter as the Bears scored five times in the opening stanza for a 5-0 lead before New Haven scored with seven seconds left in the quarter. Tarzian assisted on four of those five goals as Coast Guard led 5-1 after the first quarter.
Schmidt scored with 13:14, 7:00 and 4:26 left in the first quarter while freshman Curtis Blaise found the back of the net with 8:55 left and Dreiss scored with 2:44 left in the quarter.
New Haven got the first goal of the second quarter before Carley's goal with 10:20 left in the first half gave the Bears a 6-2 lead.
Sophomore Robert McKenna's goal with 9:42 left in the half pushed the lead to 7-2 before the Chargers scored three goals in a span of 74 seconds to cut the deficit to 7-5 with 4:04 left in the half.
Sophomore Louis DePaolis scored with 2:28 left and Dreiss added another goal with five ticks left as the Bears took a 9-5 lead to halftime.
A heavy fog rolled in to start the second half, Coast Guard took command scoring six of the first seven goals in the third quarter to take a 15-6 lead with 6:14 left in the quarter.
Dreiss found the back of the net with 12:51 left in the third pushing the Bears lead to 10-5. McKenna added a pair of third quarter goals while Carley , senior Treston Taylor and Blaise also scored as the Bears led 15-8 after three periods.
In the fourth quarter, Carley and Schmid each scored twice while Blaise and sophomore Trent Moon also scored for the Bears.
Freshman Ryan Carpenter had 12 of his 13 saves in the first half to pick up the win in goal for the Bears.
