SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Coast Guard competed at the Head of the Fish over the weekend.
The novice eight of Michaela Hepler (cox), Michael Zeller, Walter Daniels, Jerett Jenkins, James Fitzpatrick, Thorn Nelthropp, Zach Brigham, Dustin Smith, Josh Brown were 12th of 28 crews. It was a solid row. This was Zach Brigham's first race and he has only been with the team for three weeks.
Because of some scheduling issues, the team ended up racing a varsity 4 and a novice 4 – the varsity 4 was rowed by Keemiya Pourmonir, Daniel Beacon, Logan Hutson (who switched sides to make this work), Sam Irwin, and John-Paul Yalov. The four had a good row for not having had an opportunity to practice in that line-up finishing 16th of 39.
The Varsity eight of Keemiya Pourmonir, Daniel Beacon, Andrew Niedbala, Michael Brachman, Ian Hopper, , Logan Hutson, Stephen Bruno, Sam Irwin, John-Paul Yalov were 10th of 27 and had their best race of the fall. They were in a finishing pack of six boats that were within 10 seconds of each other after over 10 minutes of racing against the clock.
The best finish of the day was in the novice 4 with Michaela Hepler, Michael Brachman, Ian Hopper, Andrew Niedbala, Stephen Bruno. The 4, who have been racing as an varsity 4, were able to race from the back of the pack, pass 6 boats and earn the silver medal (2nd or 20 teams) behind Colgate University. They defeated spring rivals including Wesleyan University and Williams College.
As we move into the winter training phase I know that 1/c Dan Beacon will lead the captains practice with the intensity and sprit that have me looking forward to a productive spring,
