Bears Win Key Road Game to Remain in NEWMAC Tourney Race

NORTON, Mass. – Junior Packy Witkowski had a game-high 16 points while freshman Tyler Perez added 14 points off the bench leading Coast Guard to a 76-57 win over Wheaton in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Senior Luke Daniels added 12 points for the Bears, who improve to 16-7 overall and 7-6 in the NEWMAC while Wheaton drops to 11-12 overall and 2-11 in conference play.

The Bears, who have won six of their last seven, remain in a tie with Springfield for the fifth and final NEWMAC tournament playoff spot with a 7-6 record, one game behind three other teams at 8-5, which will make for a wild final Saturday with the possibility for a five-way tie for second place at 8-6 with four of those five teams earning a playoff spot.

Coast Guard jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the first seven minutes and the Bears led 35-28 at halftime.

The Bears used an 11-4 spurt and opened up a 57-42 lead with 11:33 left in the game and cruised to the win.

Witkowski and senior Nolan Benson each had five rebounds to lead the Bears while junior Noah Baldez had a game-high five assists.

The Bears shot 48.3 percent in the win (28-58) while hitting hitting 13 of 25 from behind the arc as Perez was 4 for 6 and Witkowski 4 for 7.

Wheaton was 20 of 53 (37.7 percent) from the floor and hit 6 of 19 from 3-point range in the loss.

Coast Guard closes out the regular season at Emerson on Saturday at 1:00.
